“Black Lightning Is Lifeless,” explains Jefferson within the first trailer for final season
Jefferson Pierce doesn’t take the death of a longtime friend / occasional enemy inspector Henderson well, judging by the first trailer for the fourth and final season of Black Lightning.
After the season three finale, in which Henderson tragically died, Jefferson (played by Cress Williams) is spotted taking turns at his friend’s grave and apparently sitting with a psychiatrist. “No matter how hard I try to protect my family, it will always end in tragedy,” he said. “I can no longer be the man I was.”
In fact, he goes so far as to explain: “Black Lightning is dead” – to which Gambi (James Remar), the editing would at least lead one to believe, replies: “Freeland will be lost without Black Lightning!” Jeff snaps back, “Freeland is lost !!!”

It was announced in November that this would be Black Lightning’s farewell run. “By the time we embarked on the Black Lightning journey, I knew Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful black women would make a unique addition to the superhero genre,” executive producer Salim Akil said in a statement. “The love that Blerds and all comic fans around the world have shown over the past three seasons has proven what we imagined: Blacks want to see themselves in all their complexity.”
“While Season 4 can be the end of a journey,” Akil added, “I’m very excited to start a new chapter and continue working with The CW as we tell the story of Painkiller” – a spin-off that was in the Developed with Black Lightning Vet Jordan Calloway.
On the casting front, original actress China Anne McClain announced she was ready to leave the series if it continued and only signed for a limited number of season four episodes, while Chantal Thuy as metahuman Grace Choi in the regular series was promoted.
