Buffy Summers turns the large 4-0: Sarah Michelle Gellar suggests “Let’s all be courageous” to honor the Slayer

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. The second hardest part is realizing your iconic alter ego is turning 40.

When Sarah Michelle Gellar learned that January 19th was a huge milestone for Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Buffy Summers, she posted on Instagram that she couldn’t believe The Chosen One was that old.

“She taught that the hardest thing in the world is to live in,” wrote Gellar, citing a pivotal moment in the season five finale. “So to your credit, let’s all be brave. Life.”

Gellar also appeared to be referring to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, adding, “This may not be the way we are used to our lives, but let’s find the beauty. So we can all live long and safely. “

In 2018 it was announced that a new contemporary Buffy series was in development, headed by Monica Owusu-Breen, showrunner of Midnight, Texas, and Joss Whedon, creator of the original series, as executive producer. Though early reports characterized the update as a reboot, Owusu-Breen later made it clear that the project – which will star a black actress – could better be classified as a revival.
