You may need to keep a handkerchief handy while you watch the trailer for Amend as he’s a beautiful sucker. Amend will walk viewers through the history of the nation as we consider what the 14th Amendment means and how it has been interpreted legally, socially, and beyond since its inception in 1868. With Smith as a consistent leader in his narrative, we see a mix of archival footage, interview soundbites, and previews of readings by famous public figures speaking for or against the Fourteenth Amendment. Among the celebs who seem to be giving these readings are Samuel L. Jackson, Mahershala Ali, Yara Shahidi, Pedro Pascal, Randall Park, and Diane Lane.
Smith also shared a statement to Amend highlighting the importance of this particular documentary examining a core ideology for our nation’s past, present and future.
“I am honored to present Amend: The Fight for America.” We live in unprecedented days as a society, as a country and as a human family. I believe that nurturing personal and historical understanding is the compelling spark that ignites the flames of much-needed compassion and healing. As Americans, we strive to do this. I believe a deeper understanding of the 14th Amendment is a critical starting point. Our hope with this series is to shed light on the beauty that America’s promise is and to share a message of connection and shared humanity so that we can better understand and celebrate our diverse experiences as Americans and the progress toward true equality that was promised to all persons under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. I’m grateful to Netflix and the phenomenal group of people who came together in front of and behind the camera to help us tell this story. ”

Here is the official recap from Amend: The Fight For America:
“Amend: The Fight for America” is a six-part documentary examining the fourteenth amendment to the US Constitution, which promised freedom and equal protection for all in 1868, as America’s enduring hallmark of democracy. ‘Amend’ uses a groundbreaking narrative format with a range of greats (Mahershala Ali, Diane Lane, Samuel L. Jackson, Pedro Pascal, Yara Shahidi, etc.) to bring life to the speeches and writings of the most ardent proponents and enemies of the Fourteenth Amendment (including Frederick Douglass, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Andrew Johnson) with insights from a number of contemporary thought leaders and experts. “Amend,” produced and hosted by Oscar-nominated actor Will Smith and Emmy Award winner Larry Wilmore, is a powerful, multimedia journey through American history that encourages viewers to wonder what “USA” really means.
