Donald Glover, Phoebe Waller-Bridge to play alongside, Co-Create of Mr. and Mrs. Smith Reboot Collection on Amazon Prime
We thought there couldn’t be a more engaging pairing on screen than Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie … but we were so wrong.
Emmy winners Donald Glover (Atlanta) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) are teaming up for a new Amazon Prime series based on the 2005 film Mr. and Mrs. Smith announced Friday. Glover and Waller-Bridge will play together on the series and will also help shape it with Francesca Sloane (Fargo), who will act as showrunner.
“Talk about the dream team!” Jennifer Salke, director of Amazon Studios, raved in a statement. “Donald and Phoebe are two of the most talented creators and performers in the world. It really is a dream for us, as well as for our global audience, to let these two forces of nature work together as a powerful creative team. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are an icon and we can’t wait to see Donald, Phoebe and Francesca make it their own. “
In the original Mr. and Mrs. Smith film, which hit theaters in 2005, Pitt and Jolie starred as the married two secret assassins hired to kill each other. A pilot for a TV restart starring Jordana Brewster and Martin Henderson was filmed by ABC in 2007 but not included on the series.
The all-rounder Glover, who also plays music under the name Childish Gambino, is currently starring in the FX comedy Atlanta, which he also created. He won the Emmy for Leading Actor in a Comedy in 2017 for Atlanta, which is expected to return to FX later this year for its third season.
Waller-Bridge played the lead role and created the Amazon comedy Fleabag, which concluded a two-season run in 2019. That year she won three Emmys for writing, acting and producing in season 2. Waller-Bridge also created the BBC America thriller Killing Eve, which is slated for season four. (She also pronounced L3-37, the droid companion of Glover’s Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story, 2018.)
