Harold and the Purple Crayon film get Shazam star Zachary Levi

A live action film based on the classic children’s book Harold and the purple crayon go ahead with Shazam! Star Zachary Levi in a leading role. The adaptation by Sony Pictures is by David Guion and Michael Handelman (Night of the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Dinner for Jewelry). John Davis (Dolemite is my name, Disney’s Jungle Cruise) is produced by David Entertainment. A director has not yet been named.

Harold and the Purple Crayon was first published in 1955. Written by Crockett Johnson, the book tells the story of a four-year-old boy who creates a whole world by drawing it with a special purple crayon and drawing his own house and bed so he can go to sleep. It’s such a simple premise, but the story was a huge hit. It spawned six sequels in the following years, ending in 1963 with Harold’s ABC.

In 2002, Adelaide Productions developed a 13-part animated series for HBO based on the original book. The series, told by Sharon Stone, with Connor Matheus as the voice of Harold, won the Daytime Emmy Award for the main title design. Each episode followed Harold with the purple pencil to explore new worlds while learning valuable life lessons.

For more than a decade there have been attempts to reinterpret Harold and the Purple Crayon on a big screen. It was reported in 2010 that Warner Bros. and Columbia Pictures teamed up for a Harold film in which Josh Klausner wrote and James Lassiter and Will Smith produced. It was later reported in 2016 that Dallas Clayton would be writing the script for a CGI-animated film version of the story. At some point Spike Jonze tried to make a Harold film too, but his vision never materialized either.

No details have been announced about this new direction for the Harold and Purple Crayon films, and it is also a “live-action adaptation”. It’s also unclear whether Levi is supposed to play Harold, perhaps as the older version of the character or as someone else involved in the story. It’s also possible for him to act as the narrator, as Sharon Stone did for the HBO animated series. In any case, this is speculation until more information about the project is published.

Zachary Levi Perhaps best known for being the title superhero in the 2019 DCEU film Shazam! to play. The film was a box office hit and already has a sequel in the works with Levi, who is set to repeat the role. Called Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the sequel is slated for release on June 2, 2023. Levi is also known for his leading role in the TV series Chuck and has starred in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Fandral in Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok.

There’s no word yet on when Harold and the Purple Crayon could start production, but given how long the idea has been languishing in developing hell, I wouldn’t be too excited about the filming just yet. That news comes from The Hollywood Reporter.
