The first teaser is here. The CW released the first teaser for the series, and while it doesn’t include footage from the show, Padalecki’s voice-over says ominously, “For a long time I chose duty to family until one day it wasn’t an option.” Walker’s badge flies through the air, transforming into a wedding ring, poker chip and back into his badge before settling into a wooden wall like a ninja star.
The series is simply called Walker. Instead of just tearing off the original title, a shortened version of the name was chosen on this reboot. Walker is billed as “a reinterpretation of the long-running action / crime series Walker, Texas Ranger”.

Jared Padalecki will star and act as executive producer. Padalecki will play Cordell Walker, a widower and father of two. After being undercover for two years, Cordell returns to Austin to reconnect with his children while running away with his conservative family. In addition to Anna Fricke, Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore, Padalecki will also work as Executive Producer.
Padalecki’s real wife will play his wife on the screen. Deadline reports that Genevieve Padalecki will play Emily Walker, Cordell’s dearly late wife, in a recurring role in season 1. Her story will be told in flashbacks and she will be “able, generous, and focused on helping the disenfranchised”.
Other supporting characters were cast. One of the hurdles Walker faces after returning to Austin is confronting a new partner, Micki, who happens to be one of the first women in Texas Rangers history. The 100s Lindsey Morgan was cast as Micki, whose character description shows she grew up in San Antonio, and her family has been in Texas since before it was Texas. She is described as “focused and empathetic” and her background in the army and police force has provided her firsthand knowledge of what it is like to be singled out and discriminated against based on her gender.
Variety reports that Once Upon A Time’s Jeff Pierre has also been cast as Micki’s friend, Trey Barnett, who is described as warm and loving but is persecuted nonetheless. He is an Army medic who recently returned from duty and is having trouble adjusting to home life.
Meanwhile, Pretty Little Liar’s alum Keegan Allen has been cast as Liam, Cordell Walker’s gay, conservative younger brother, who is also assistant district attorney. He is described as “smart, slightly complacent, but with a strong moral compass” and is prone to sacrificing his personal life in favor of family responsibilities. One of these responsibilities was to look after Cordell’s children while their father was away.
Deadline Reports Other additions to the cast include Mitch Pileggi as Bonham Walker, Cordell’s tough, conservative, and tenacious father; and Molly Hagan as Cordell’s mother, Abeline Walker, described as an “unstoppable force of nature”.
At the heart of the show is a riddle. You may have noticed that “widower” bit in Padalecki’s character description, and there is definitely more to this story. In addition to the drama about family and work, Cordell Walker will also look at the suspicious circumstances surrounding his wife’s death.
Jensen Ackles is absolutely ready to direct. Padalecki’s longtime co-star has gone behind the camera several times on Supernatural, and when TV Guide asked if he was interested in directing his BFF’s new series, he said he would absolutely “come over and boss him around a bit”. when Padalecki asked.
Additional coverage from Keisha Hatchett.
