Netflix, Amazon Set Awards Placements for Actors in “Chicago 7”, “One Night time in Miami”
Netflix and Amazon each have a variety of strong performances to choose from for Oscar voters this year, and will no doubt launch award campaigns for multiple films on their schedule. However, the streamers recently set placements for actors in two of their top contestants. The Chicago Trial 7 and One night in Miami.
Aaron Sorkin‘s courtroom drama The Trial of the Chicago 7 is based on the true story of seven (well, eight actually) very different activists who faced conspiracy and riot (among other things) following antiwar protests that took place on the Internet in the 1968 Democratic National Convention .
Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Star next to it Jeremy Strong, Mark Rylance, Michael Keaton, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, John Carroll Lynch and Frank Langella, the latter of which is considered out of control Judge Julius Hoffman. While there was some early talk that Cohen and Redmayne could be cast as the lead cast, the Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the entire cast will be moved to the supporting cast category.
THR notes that the decision was made by Headlightswho have favourited nominations for earned Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams in addition to winning the best picture. Previous winners crash, Little Miss Sunshine and Babel also adopted the all-support approach, with Matt Dillon, Abigail Breslin, Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi all nominated and Alan Arkin win for LMS.
Now this year’s Leading Actors Race has no shortage of strong competitors, which could explain Netflix’s decision. In this case, Cohen and Redmayne will benefit, especially given their extra time compared to their co-stars. Like Redmayne, however, Rylance is a recent Oscar winner himself, while Keaton and Langella have been nominated for an Oscar just like Cohen (though he was meant to write), and rising stars Strong and Abdul-Mateen II have just won Emmys Succession and Guardian, respectively. What I’m saying is that there is just too much talent for just five slots.
Of course, it’s entirely possible that Chicago 7 could get multiple nominations in a single category, but it’s just as possible that voters fail to reach consensus on who the standout film is and the entire cast can split the split vote . No film has landed three actors in a single category since then The Godfather Part II in 1974.
Some price watchers have speculated that Cohen’s spirited twist as a Abbie Hoffman could be rewarded by Hollywood after the actor co-struck a punch at the Republicans Borate 2But even here, it’s possible that Amazon’s high-profile comedy distracts attention from Cohen’s appearance on Chicago 7. Much has been said about the age difference between Cohen and the real Hoffman, but speaking as a Massachusetts man. It’s the English actor’s wobbly Boston accent that should raise your eyebrows – if that’s what you’re into. Otherwise I thought it was damn good too. Was he the best in the cast? I do not know that …
In fact, THR tried to explain Netflix’s decision to run the entire Chicago 7 cast in the supporting category by saying (correctly) that everyone seemed to have a different favorite and unlike the talented cast, there was no clear difference gave Spike Lee‘s Since 5 Bloodswhere critics and strategists agreed Delroy Lindo was the true lead of the film and everyone else (Clarke Peters, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Norm Lewis, Jonathan Majors and the late one Chadwick Boseman) would advertise as a supporting actor. Speaking of Boseman: Thanks to his impending surrender, Netflix will also use him for a posthumous nomination in the leading actor category Ma Rainey’s black bottom.
Meanwhile Amazona’s own piece One Night in Miami from the first-time director Regina King and writers Kemp Powers has also earned awards on the virtual festival circuit. The film envisions an incredible meeting between black icons Malcolm X., Cassius Clay, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke when they tried in 1964 to define a new world for themselves and their people.
Amazon will run a campaign Kingsley Ben-Adir and Eli Goree as the lead cast for their respective twists and turns as Malcolm X and the boxer who would soon call himself Muhammad Ali while Aldis Hodge and Leslie Odom Jr. will compete in the supporting category after playing soccer star Brown and soul singer Cooke. Haven’t seen One Night in Miami myself, but the word on the street suggests that Goree and Odom Jr. have the best chance of scoring nominations. I can’t wait to consider this debate at a later stage.
Both The Trial of the Chicago 7 and One Night in Miami are expected to be top contenders for the Screen Actors Guild’s Best Ensemble Award, which is considered a major contributor to the Oscar race. Personally, I just hope the Academy will remember it Sound of metal Stars Ahmed Rice and John Raci come February because they are both amazing in this movie. But don’t take my word for it!
