New Artist Highlight: 1st Base Runner is the brand new Electro Shoegaze sound that ‘All Ideas’ will flip to
1st Base Runner is a new project from Austin-based artist Tim Husmann that has only released two singles so far in anticipation of his upcoming album Seven Years of Silence, but we can already tell you it’s going to be fine. The “astral-gothic” vibes of the electronic / dreampop / shoegaze-rock hybrid tracks “All Thoughts” and “A Hymn” (IDLES cover) are immediately recognizable for their quality, passion and heartbreaking honesty.
Since no real new dream pop frontrunner had made any claim to the last few years, the shoemakers among us, especially the younger ones, urgently needed a sound like that of the 1st Base Runner. Husmann seems to agree that this music absolutely has to be out there.
It was something that had to be done. For several years I had tried to suppress the concepts and ideas examined in the 8 tracks. It is my willingness to be vulnerable and exposed to others in order to sense some basic truths about what it means to be here and to be present. It is an examination of expectations and shortcomings and how they, in turn, make us more human. Nobody gets out with clean hands, not on this trip and not in this life.
The vulnerability is absolutely right if you look at those first two tracks. “All Thoughts” is an absolute gut punch of a track with a painful, echoing guitar that sounds like the most delicious indie post punk and shoegaze of the late 80s. The serious, Tom Waits-like voice with its free minor keys and simple but highly personal lyrics makes even the most steely Gothic spine shudder. The electronic end of this track is also reminiscent of Dream Pop a’la Joy Division of the 80s and 90s, Dead Can Dance or New Order, with little video vintage video game nods here and there, but it also has a more modern, ravey vibe to it . The result is exactly the niche GenZ rock / EDM crossover music needs to be filled in, and the quality of the production gives 1st Base Runner a real chance to do just that.
“Hymn” is a cover that Husmann has just posted on Bandcamp and his YouTube page of the original IDLES track. It’s unclear if this cover will appear on the upcoming album, but it brings the same openness and painful, beautiful vulnerability to his version of the already very emotional post-punk anthem. The stripped-down, piano-accompanied version makes “A Hymn” even more post-punk. Nick Cave would be proud.
Here at Your EDM we don’t come out often and say “follow this artist” (we think we’re too cool), but seriously, follow this artist. The raw, emotional nature of 1st Base Runner’s first two tracks, and most likely the following seven years of silence, reach an emotional itch in this day and age that we all dearly wanted to scratch. That beautiful heartbeat that only a good shoe shine or dream pop can give us is exactly what we need if we all heal together from the isolation of 2020.
“All Thoughts” and “A Hymn” (cover) are both out and can be streamed on Bandcamp. “All Thoughts” can also be streamed on Spotify. Hopefully, on the 1st Base Runner YouTube page, you’ll find more new videos leading up to the release of Seven Years of Silence.
