New Stone Chilly Steve Austin documentary comes from current dance producers
Stone Cold Steve Austin will be the subject of a new documentary in the works of the producers of the renowned Michael Jordan documentaries The last Dance. Directed by Jason Hehir, The Last Dance explores the career of NBA legend Michael Jordan, with a particular focus on his final season with the Chicago Bulls. After premiering on ESPN in April and increasing availability on Netflix, the documentaries received critical acclaim, scoring near-perfect scores on Rotten Tomatoes and winning awards at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards and the TCA Awards.
In a new video interview with Chris Van Vliet, former WWE ring announcer Lilian Garcia suggested that Stone Cold Steve Austin would be the next topic the Last Dance team tackles. While Garcia was speaking at length with Austin about a popular episode of her Chasing Glory podcast, The Last Dance producer Jacob Rogal called her to discuss an interview with her for a new documentary about the Texas Rattlesnake. It also sounds like the new document could arrive in 2021.
“WWE reached out to me first. They said, ‘The producer on The Last Dance is going to reach out to you. They want you to be involved in the documentary.’ I said, “Wait what?” In the end, they reach me and it was fun because my husband and I were watching this documentary when this news came in. So when [producer Jacob Rogal] I turned to myself and said, “Jake, I’m literally watching your documentary right now. That’s great.’ Come on and find out they want to do a documentary for ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin out next year. “
Garcia also says she was told that her interview with Austin on her podcast made it clear to the Last Dance team that they “wanted to do another documentary because he already had some”. She adds that Rogal told her he felt inspired to delve into Austin’s life story after learning that the world-famous wrestler was once so shy he couldn’t even order food “from the Dairy Queen” to later to become one of them the best public speakers in the history of the wrestling business.
WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, who argued with Austin on television for years in the 1990s, will also get his own documentaries. While working at Netflix, WWE Brand Chief Stephanie McMahon recently announced that her father will be featured in a new documentary that is split into four episodes. Bill Simmons will serve as executive producer alongside Chris Smith and WWE Studios. It is not yet clear whether the two projects are linked.
Last year it was also reported that WWE and A&E teamed up to produce five new biography episodes with the WWE Hall of Famers. Together with Austin, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Booker T and Shawn Michaels are featured in new episodes. Premiere dates have not yet been announced.
