[Warning: The following contains spoilers for Thursday’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Read at your own risk!]
Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo) is still fighting for her life at Grey’s Anatomy, and while Gray Sloan’s doctors continue to seek treatments to get her back on her feet. Meanwhile, Meredith continues to visit her beach dream purgatory, in which dead figures from her passport appear to give her advice on life. After a frustrating time with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) in the first two episodes of the season, Meredith spent the Thursday hour with George (TR Knight).
“George O’Malley will always claim my heart,” Knight wrote on Instagram of the iconic return. “Thanks to Ellen, Chandra, Jim, Krista and all the familiar faces who shared your beautiful light again.”
Meredith’s former BFF and the heart of the season one intern group spent a little more time with Meredith than Derek, and the two actually managed to have conversations that brought Grey’s Anatomy fans to tears. Mer asked if they had a choice to live or die, and George said he didn’t know – he would have stayed if he could but had no choice. Later the two talk about grief and how Meredith got on after George and Derek passed away. George explains that his mother could never get over it, although sometimes he tries to shake her out. “Some grief is heavier than others,” he said solemnly.
When it became clear that Meredith’s hospital staff were having difficulty getting her into an experimental trial with a high death rate, George warned that Meredith Richard (James Pickens Jr.) could break if he stayed on the beach. Meredith regained consciousness just enough to convince Richard to put her on trial, but by the end of the episode she was still on the beach with George.
The bad news doesn’t stop there. More members of the Gray Sloan family will fight the virus next week, including Tom (Greg Germann), who eventually became symptomatic, and Bailey’s (Chandra Wilson) son, Tucker, who rolled to the emergency room at the end of the preview for next week became a consequence. The COVID roller coaster will still be on the show
