The Aragon Ballroom in Chicago suffers structural injury from heavy snowfall

Chicago’s historic concert venue Aragon ballroom has suffered damage after a dump of nearly 18 inches of snow on the town.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said a piece of the wall fell just before 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Crews showed up on site to spray water on the roof and remove at least a foot of heavy snow and debris.

“If you get a foot of thick snow, you get roof failure,” Langford explained. “We haven’t had too many yet, but that’s exactly what happens when 12-14 inches of snow has been lying on a roof that is old and potentially at risk for a while.”

The Chicago Department of Buildings reportedly missed the July inspection of Aragon because the venue was closed due to the pandemic. Fortunately, much of the 94-year-old building is still in perfect condition and the structure looks robust.

Before the pandemic, the Live Nation venue hosted a number of EDM events – Subtronics, Jauz and Habstrakt, Galantis, Steve Aoki, and more.
