The DC Film Marathon takes place on TNT forward of the TV premiere of Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel premieres on TNT this weekend, marking its TV debut. This is probably good news for the casual Marvel fan who may have missed it, or for those who want to put it on their DVR. But the cable network has decided to air a marathon of DC movies ahead of the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster. It’s certainly an odd choice, considering there are plenty of Marvel films out there that could serve as a gateway to the big premiere.
TNT’s lineup for the weekend at the Captain Marvel premiere on Sunday January 10th is filled with DC movies. Choices include Justice League, Suicide Squad, Batman Begins, Wonder Woman, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Man of Steel. No other Marvel movies in sight. And it’s not that the network doesn’t showcase MCU titles. The network recently showed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame in a row. One wonders why everyone who’s responsible for programming at TNT decided to play DC superheroes all weekend before Brie Larson’s big show as Carol Danvers on cable TV. The full schedule is as follows.
Friday, January 8: Justice League (8 p.m. ET), Suicide Squad (10:30 p.m. ET)
Saturday, Jan. 9: Suicide Squad (3 p.m. ET), Justice League (5:30 p.m. ET), Wonder Woman (8 p.m. ET), Batman Begins (11 p.m. ET)
Sunday, January 10: Batman Begins (11 a.m. ET), Man of Steel (2 p.m. ET), Wonder Woman (5 p.m. ET), Captain Marvel (8 p.m. ET)
This doesn’t mean there should be a feud between DC and Marvel. A line drawn in the sand. Many fans of superheroes love characters and stories from both universes. Even creators like James Gunn, known for directing Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel, are doing The Suicide Squad right now before heading back to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. 3. From a programming point of view, it just seems strange to lead to the network premiere of a huge Marvel movie with a series of DC movies.
Captain Marvel turned out to be a huge success for Disney and Marvel Studios. With Oscar winner Brie Larson in the lead role, the film was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. It takes place in the 90s when Samuel L. Jackson returns as the younger Nick Fury. It was a formula for success that grossed $ 1.1 billion at the global box office. Larson also played the role in Avengers: Endgame, the highest-grossing film in history.
Marvel is currently preparing for Captain Marvel 2, which will be led by Nia DaCosta. Marvel star Iman Vellani will appear as Kamala Khan alongside Brie Larson. Captain Marvel premieres on TNT this Sunday. The full schedule of the network can be found at TNTdrama.com.
