The best shows and movies on Amazon this month

Dexter

Available from January 1st
During the heyday of prestigious drama television, Dexter Showtime’s entry into the crowded room was followed by a blood splatter expert (Michael C. Hall) who also happened to be a serial killer. It was an instant hit, with his macabre view of the mind of a killer who carefully went through the process of killing other killers and cleaning up the mess afterwards. The show’s appeal waned in later seasons as Showtime has no problem running out of creative juices while series are still pretty popular, but the early seasons are still great.

herself

Available January 15th
This tearjerker turns into a mega tearjerker because everyone has an Irish accent, and we all know Irish accents make the hit drama so much tougher. The Sundance favorite follows a woman who has recently been out of an abusive relationship and is looking for a new place for her and her children by literally building it from scratch. The film has received positive reviews, with star Clare Dunne’s performance being a highlight.

One night in Miami

Available January 15th
If Regina King is half as good a director as an actress, her directorial debut, One Night in Miami, should be fantastic. King sits behind the camera to tell the story of a night when four legends took to their fields – boxer Muhammad Ali, soccer star Jim Brown, singer Sam Cooke and activist Malcolm X – after Ali’s title bout against Sonny Liston hanging out and about the power and responsibility they have. The reviews have been high, with praise for King and her direction, as well as a fantastic adaptation of the play it is based on.

Alone

Available January 18th
This nude thriller has a simple and familiar premise – a woman is haunted by a horror – but ideas well-crafted can feel fresh as long as they’re done right. John Hyams, whose previous credits include Netflix’s visceral and relentless zombie series Black Summer, creates this tense movie by keeping it simple and allowing the action and intensity of the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest to naturally grow through picture and sound. It is not for everyone as there is some realistic violence and torture against a woman, but it received positive reviews.

How I met your mother

Available January 19th
Do you need nine seasons of a beloved comedy to fill your life? The CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” lands on Amazon as one of the best hangout comedies ever made as she follows a group of friends navigating love and life in New York City. It also features one of the most controversial endings in sitcom history. So be prepared for it.
