The New York Competition Sequence affords 300 performances in 100 days to kick off stay occasions
New York starts the return of events with NY PopsUp, a free nationwide festival that is sure to bring back live concerts.
Governor Andrew Cuomo recently made the announcement, showing its support for revitalizing arts and culture across the state. Needless to say, the creative industries struggled during the pandonavirus pandemic (COVID-19) and it’s time for them to thrive again.
NY PopsUp runs February 20 through Labor Day and features over 300 shows over 100 days in the five boroughs of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. This “pilot program” will help determine how live events can be brought back while showcasing New York’s extensive performing arts scene. Curated by Zack Winokur and in collaboration with a council of artistic advisors.
Cuomo said in a press release:
Creative synergies are vital for cities to survive. Our arts and culture industries have been shut down across the country, putting a terrible strain on workers and the economy. We want to be aggressive when it comes to reopening the state and getting our economy back on its feet, and NY PopsUp will be an important bridge to the wider reopening of our world-class venues and institutions. New York has led the way through this entire pandemic, and we’re going to bring art back again.
NY PopsUp cast members include Amy Schumer, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Aparna Nancherla, Billy Porter, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Chris Rock, Dev Hynes, Hugh Jackman, Idina Menzel, Jon Batiste, Sarah Jessica Parker, Q-Tip, Kenan Thompson and many, many more to be announced.
The concept uses the existing parks and structures in New York to create pop-up stages across the city. In addition, multidisciplinary flexible venues, also known as “flexible venues” – open entertainment spaces with no fixed seating that allow for better social distancing practices. Flex venues include The shed, the Apollo, the Harlem stage, La MaMa and The Alice Busch Opera Theater des Glimmerglass Festival.
NY PopsUp events strictly adhere to COVID-19 health and safety guidelines.
