Why Warner Bros’ huge HBO Max determination doesn’t suggest the dying of theaters
The HBO Max window is still pretty limited
It’s not that the Warner Bros / HBO Max strategy is a long-term solution anyway. According to the regulations that apply to the debut of films like Wonder Woman in 1984, it’s more of a pretty limited window if you want to get into the action from your couch. Since the film becomes exclusive to theaters after the first month of simultaneous release, there is still a window of exclusivity to theaters. If people like the DC Comics movie enough, and if it’s safe enough in their market, they can get Wonder Woman 1984 or any of the other Warner Bros. releases back in theaters in this model. Not to mention that Warner Bros is only touting this model for the studio’s 2021 release board, it’s not like bypassing the theater entirely.
