Willem Dafoe noticed on Spider-Man Three set, will the unique inexperienced goblin return?
Willem Dafoe was reportedly discovered on the set of Spider-Man 3. As early as December 2020, it was reported that Dafoe and Thomas Haden Church were in talks with the studio to return, although this has never been confirmed. There are many rumors surrounding the highly anticipated sequel many comic book fans will stage with the live-action Spider-Verse. In a recent interview, Tom Holland teased fans by saying, “I can say it’s the most ambitious stand-alone superhero film ever made.”
According to sources Willem Dafoe was seen on the Spider-Man 3 set this week. Thomas Haden Church has not been seen in the area, although people will most likely keep a close eye on it right now. In the previous Sony Spider-Man films, Dafoe played Green Goblin while Church played Sandman. Jamie Foxx confirmed that he would return as Electro in the sequel, and Alfred Molina has been confirmed as Dr. Octopus will return. Foxx later deleted his social media post to celebrate his casting.
Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, aka Norman Osborn, died in the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man film, though Dafoe consistently came back to haunt James Franco’s Harry Osborn. So there will be plenty of questions about how the villain could be back for Spider-Man 3, which doesn’t even take into account that the character technically doesn’t exist in Tom Holland’s world of Peter Parker. There are a lot of explanations that need to be made but it seems Marvel Studios and Sony all worked out.
With all of these older villains emerging from the wood for Spider-Man 3, attention has turned to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, who both played Peter Parker for Sony and are also returning. Rumors have been around for months, although nothing is remotely official. When asked recently about Garfield and Maguire’s return, Tom Holland said: “Beats me, I don’t know [if Maguire and Garfield are in the movie]. If so, they haven’t told me yet … That would be something Marvel would do. I watch the film and say, “So that was the tennis ball!”
Tom Holland used to be the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that fans could rely on to spoil something big. However, it seems these days are behind the young actor who was repeatedly warned about his loose lips by Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. Holland could very well have learned to lie about Marvel secrets in the last couple of years, which is likely a huge relief for the studio. With all of these returning actors, it would be difficult not to include Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in any form, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens in the end. The Geeks Worldwide were the first to reveal that Willem Dafoe was spotted on the Spider-Man 3 set.
